Supernatural: Top 10 Behind-The-Scenes Moments
How did a Google search help create the character of Castiel? Is it true that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki used to live together? And why showrunners never allowed the Winchester brothers to find true love? Let’s discover all the crazy things that happened on the set of Supernatural during the last 15 years!
THE BIGGEST SECRETS BEHIND CASTIEL
When Misha Collins got the role in Supernatural, he thought that he was going to play a demon. But on the first day of filming, he got a surprise. Collins later recalled,
“It wasn’t until I did my first take of the character that Eric Kripke said, ‘That was pretty good, but the truth is it’s an angel, not a demon, so can you just switch it up?’”
Can you imagine how shocked Misha was when he heard that? But since he wanted to be part of the Supernatural cast, he had to deal with reality and accept that his character was going to be a very different guy. And at first, he didn’t think that he’d have to play Castiel for so long!
Initially, he was supposed to only appear in a few episodes of season four, but fans loved the angel so much that he eventually became a series regular. And by the way, have you ever thought about how unusual his name is? After all, the series was full of angels and demons with very familiar names, like Lucifer, Balthazar, or Gabriel. But who is Castiel?
Has he ever appeared anywhere before? No, he hasn’t. He’s a brand-new angel created by the Supernatural writers! And the show creator Eric Kripke came up with his name by doing a simple Google search. “We were airing on Thursdays & needed a new character name. I googled “Angel of Thursday” (for luck): got Castiel,” he shared on Twitter. Yeah, it’s as simple as that!
BROTHERLY LOVE EXISTS!
All those years of playing brothers on the small screen certainly left their mark on the main actors’ lives. Jensen and Jared had chemistry from the very beginning, even when they barely knew each other. Ackles once said to Variety:
“It was just immediate chemistry. There was an ease to it. There was a familiarity to it. Once we got into it with each other, it just fell in place.”
And the actor added that working with Padalecki was more comfortable than with anyone else in his life. It was a perfect foundation for a solid friendship. Unlike many other actors who play friends but aren’t as close in real life, these two are even closer than you think! For some time, they even lived together!
In an interview, Jared once recalled how their days on the set would transition into long evenings and nights full of chatting and playing guitar until they’d fall asleep. They got their own places only when they both got married in 2010. (We’ll get back to their marriages soon, by the way, because their romances are also full of supernatural facts!)
THE DISAPPEARANCE OF DEAN’S ICONIC JACKET
If you’re a fan of Supernatural, you’re probably also a fan of the show’s wardrobe. The clothes the Winchester brothers wore throughout the show's run became the series’ trademark, and things like Dean’s leather jacket played an essential part in the plot.
Remember how Dean inherited it from his father, John Winchester, and by wearing it all the time, he demonstrated how much he idolized his old man? Throughout the first five seasons, fans thought of this jacket as Dean’s superhero attire. It was just like Thor’s cape or Captain America’s shield!
But in season six, the jacket was suddenly gone. No-one in the show explained what happened to it, we just never saw it again. Turns out, there was a reason behind the jacket’s mysterious disappearance. Sometime between seasons five and six, the cast was in Los Angeles for a photoshoot, and part of their wardrobe had to be flown over from Vancouver. But the luggage didn’t make it there because it was stolen on the way!
Surprisingly, there was only one leather jacket, unlike the multiple trench coats Castiel Wears. So there was nothing to replace Dean’s signature attire with. What a bummer! That’s why his wardrobe changed to a variety of military-style jackets in the subsequent seasons. Do you still miss the good old jacket?
THE SUPERNATURAL BOYS ARE THE ULTIMATE PRANKERS
We’ve already discussed their bond in real life, but did you know that their friendship is unique not only because they play brothers in the hit series? They also have another very important thing in common, which is - their love for pranks!
Jared and Jensen regularly played pranks on the cast and crew of Supernatural. They’d try especially hard when a newcomer joined the series. Looks like it’s sort of an initiation – you can’t just become part of the Supernatural cast - you have to have a prank played on you! But even those who’d been part of the team for a long time could still be victims.
For example, when Misha Collins was directing an episode of Supernatural, Jared and Jensen made sure that he’d remember that day. In an interview with Entertainment, Collins recalled how they threw pies in his face, pegged him with water balloons, and even removed the seat on his director’s chair! Ah, they had SO much fun on set, they will undoubtedly miss it so much after the show ends!
BOBBY SINGER IS BASED ON REAL PERSON
Similarly to Castiel, this character was supposed to appear only briefly, but he remained in the show and became part of the recurring cast. A rough but warm-hearted man, who hunts supernatural creatures quickly became a father figure to the Winchester brothers and a favorite character for many fans.
But did you have any idea that Bobby Singer is real? Well, kinda. I don’t mean that the Bobby Singer from Supernatural is a real monster hunter. But he’s based on someone closely attached to the show. I’m talking about Robert Singer, the longtime writer, director, and executive producer of the series.
Eric Kripke decided to use his name because Robert reminded him of a father figure. Here’s how Singer himself commented on giving his name to the character: “Had I known he was going to last that long, I certainly would’ve objected a little more strenuously.”
COLLINS HATED CASTIEL’S DEEP VOICE
You might be surprised because, like everyone else, you probably love his voice. Collins loved it too in the beginning because the powerful and commanding tone suited the character so much. But then again, he had no idea that he was going to play him for so long and, when Castiel became a recurring character, the actor deeply regretted giving this voice to him.
“I’ve been doing it for years and there are definitely times when I have to go home and drink hot lemon water and have a sore throat,” Collins once shared.
But he couldn't do anything about it at that point. The voice became Castiel’s trademark, just like his suit and trench coat, and fans couldn’t imagine him sounding any other way. So Misha just had to deal with it, drink his hot lemon water, and keep on torturing his vocal cords.
‘CASTIEL’ WAS TIRED OF HIS ICONIC OUTFIT
Surprisingly, Castiel’s now-iconic outfit was actually inspired by the DC comic book character of John Constantine. But when the trenchcoat-wearing demon hunter got his own show in 2014, many of the Supernatural fans didn’t realize that his character of John Constantine existed first.
Unexpectedly, it wasn’t the rival show that inspired Castiel’s changeover. It was Misha Collins, who was said to have been tired of wearing the same wardrobe season after season.
If you think that Jared and Jensen’s friendship couldn’t be more awesome, you should know that they got married within months of each other and were groomsmen in each other’s weddings. And what’s more, they both got married to actresses that appeared in Supernatural!
Genevieve Cortese played Ruby, a woman who dated Sam in seasons four and five and then turned out to be using him to set a demon free. Initially, the writers planned to keep them together in the series. After all, Jared and Genevieve looked like a lovely couple and had great chemistry. But… they began dating in real life, too, and soon got married.
So the writers thought that making them a couple on-screen would look too cheesy and wrote Ruby off. Meanwhile, Ackles is also married to a CW actress known for her role in One Tree Hill. Her name is Danneel Harris. Unlike Jared and Genevieve, they didn’t meet on the set of Supernatural.
But Danneel did appear in the series later. In season 13, she became part of the recurring cast, playing an angel who landed on earth after the Great Fall from Heaven. Both Jared and Jensen are happy in their married lives, and both of them have three kids. Unlike their on-screen characters…
WHY ARE THE WINCHESTER BROTHERS STILL SINGLE?
Have you ever thought about why Dean and Sam’s romances never ended well? Sometimes, they had to break up to ensure their girlfriends’ safety. And in other cases, they’d lose their lovers to Death. When you think about it, it might even seem weird why they’re so unlucky in love.
Kripke was repeatedly asked why the Winchester brothers’ romantic lives were so tragic. And he answered that the fans were to blame. You see, Sam and Dean have so many female fans, and for them, even the thought of seeing either of them taken by another woman is unbearable!
So for the sake of the show fans’ peace of mind, the writers decided neither of the brothers would settle down. Do you feel guilty for their love life troubles now?
NOT TOO MANY FILMING LOCATIONS
The episodes of Supernatural always look so awesome that we never even think about the crew working on a budget. But they actually had to do it, especially at the beginning of the show. The entire budget for the first season was only two hundred thousand dollars. In comparison, for the final season of Game of Thrones, episodes were estimated to cost 15 million dollars each!
So it’s no wonder that the Supernatural crew had to keep costs low and to save some money for CGI, they only used one house to film multiple locations. In the first season, they reused one building and transformed it into a hospital, an asylum, a prison, and an apartment building.
And even still, whenever you see Dean and Sam in a house, it’s probably the same location reused once again. Isn’t it amazing how creative they are in making the same place look different each time? It’s no wonder the series lasted for so long, and yet…
EVERYTHING WAS SUPPOSED TO END MUCH EARLIER
Can you imagine the last ten years without Supernatural? You probably can’t, but it was very much a possibility because, according to an initial plan, the series was supposed to end back in 2010. That's right - we're crying over the show's ending now, but it was nearly over a long time ago!
Eric Kripke once said that he had a storyline that perfectly wrapped up after the fifth season with the Winchester brothers avenging their mother’s death. But the show became so immensely popular and got such a tremendous fan following that the show creator changed his mind.
Giving the reins to other writers, he remained on as a creative consultant for the show. And eventually, Supernatural became the longest-running sci-fi series in US television history and remained loved by its fans till the very end.
It never got dry or pathetic, as many other long-running shows do, but its every storyline, every new character, and every urban legend made it iconic. How do you feel about Supernatural ending this fall? Will you miss the show, or do you think it’s time for it to end?
