Meet Elon Musk's Kids, Ex-Wives & Current Partner
Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards played Richard Attenborough’s grandchildren in the original Jurassic Park from 1993. But after their pretty successful time on the big screen, they seemed to disappear. Like Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern, some of the other cast members are still huge celebrities, but what happened to these child stars? Their path in Hollywood was not smooth-sailing as the rest. It’s been almost three decades since the premiere, and you might be shocked to learn that they appeared in several projects over the years—but you had no idea it was them!
Steven Spielberg changed the game of movies with the release of Jurassic Park in 1993. It brought worth an era where many little kids wished they could visit such a park. Ariana Richard and Joseph Mazzello played little kids and were influenced greatly by the experience. In fact, Spielberg became a surprising part of their lives, even after they became adults!
You might think that this story was Spielberg’s idea, but Jurassic Park is actually based on the novel by Michael Crichton from 1990. However, no one imagined how successful the movie would be. There are four sequels, and there’s another one on the way. However, you won’t see the original kids in any of the new ones for a reason.
Meanwhile, more of the original stars are still prominent figures in Hollywood. Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laure Dern are actually returning for Jurassic World: Dominion. But you might not be familiar with the rest of their history in the industry. Mazzello and Richards have appeared in several other movies, but you might be shocked to learn which ones!
The cast entire cast has moved on, and it’s a treat to see how different they look now. In fact, Mazzello recently appeared in an Academy Award-nominated film, but you probably didn’t know it was him! Meanwhile, Ariana is focusing on something completely different—the most incredible job in the world!
Goldblum played the role of mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm. He often argued with Hammond constantly about how dangerous the park was and warned everyone that the dinosaurs would get away. Of course, that’s exactly what happened. Meanwhile, the actor is an icon for many people.
The actor already had a great career before the film, but it sky-rocketed since then. In 1997, he appeared in the first sequel, just like most of the original cast. But you might also remember him from movies like Independence Day, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Independence Day: Resurgence, and more.
Goldblum has also appeared in many television shows, including Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Glee, Will & Grace, Raines, Portlandia, etc. However, most people might recognize him better from his hilarious part in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok. Meanwhile, he will also appear in the upcoming Jurassic Park film.
Attenborough was definitely the most important cast member in the 1993 movie. He had already a long-standing career as an actor, producer, and director since the 1940s. Additionally, the actor had received two Oscars, four BAFTAs, and four Golden Globes by the time he got the part in Spielberg’s dinosaur epic.
He played the role of John Hammond in the film, who created the dinosaur park and often fought with Goldblum’s character over its danger. Around the time of the film’s premiere, the actor received the title of The Right Honorable Lord Attenborough, Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Lord Richard also appeared in the first sequel, but he is best known for other films such as Miracle on 24th Street and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. You might also recognize him from Elizabeth and The Great Escape. Unfortunately, Attenborough passed away in 2014 at the age of 90.
Shakespearean-trained Bob Peck was best known for the U.K. show Edge of Darkness, but he played the gamekeeper of the park in Spielberg’s film. His job was to keep the dinosaurs in check and even said that velociraptors seemed smarter than the rest. He even referred to one of them as “clever girl.”
After playing Muldoon in Jurassic Park, the actor appeared on television. You might recognize him as General Tango from The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. In 1994, he also starred as Giuseppe Verdi in Verdi. Of course, Peck continued working in films such as The Opium War and The Scold’s Bride. Unfortunately, he passed in 1999 at 53.
Molen played the role of Dr. Gerry Harding, the veterinarian of the dinosaurs in the park. He appeared in the scene where they treated a sick Triceratops. While his role in the film was not particularly important, the actor was much more involved behind the camera. In fact, he worked for Spielberg many times.
Molen worked as a producer for five of Spielberg’s films. He even won an Oscar for co-producing Schindler’s List. After the dinosaur epic, he produced several other movies such as Twister, The Flintstones, Minority Report, etc. Molen has since retired but continues to work on documentaries.
Sandoval played the role of Juanito Rostagno, someone who had never seen a dinosaur before the films' events. He was the owner of the Mano de Dios Amber Mine in the park. You might know him best from the scene when Donald Gennaro came to talk about inspecting the location, and they discovered an insect encased in amber.
Most people recognize his face easily, as he is a great character actor in the business. He had already gathered fame before Jurassic Park. Sandoval has worked in more than 30 films, including The Book of Life and Brüno. However, some fans might know him best from 7th Heaven, Kingpin, and Medium.
Thor played the role of Lewis Dodgson, who was essentially the real villain of the movie, not T-rex. He owned the competing company Biosyn and paid Dennis Nedry to steal dinosaur embryos. In the end, it was his fault that the park collapsed into chaos. Of course, the actor has also appeared in many projects after the 1993 film.
The actor also has credits in screenwriting and directing. Aside from Jurassic Park, he is best known for appearing in Hook. In the mid-1990s, his wife started working as an acting coach, and he joined her. Unfortunately, Thor got into serious trouble with the law in 2016 and was sent to prison.
While there were many tragic casualties in the film, viewers definitely celebrated when Donald Gennaro met his end. He was an unscrupulous lawyer sent to shut down the park. One of the most memorable scenes in the film was him in the Jeep when T-Rex attacked. Gennaro tried to escape but got caught in the bathroom.
Ferrero is best known as Izzy Moreno from the ‘80s series Miami Vice, and that’s why fans loved seeing him in Spielberg’s movie. Afterward the dinosaur epic, he worked in Get Shorty and Gods and Monsters. Additionally, the actor collaborated with CollegeHumor for a parody of his character.
Wong played the role of Dr. Henry Wu, the person who created the dinosaurs in the park. The issue is that Wu seemed to focus completely on making his experiments happened instead of the consequences to the world. Since then, the actor has managed to build a successful career in television.
While you might remember Dr. Wu, you probably recognize the actor best as Dr. George Huang in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. In 2016, Wong appeared in Gotham as Hugo Strange. However, one of his most memorable roles was Whiterose in Mr. Robot, which earned him several award nominations.
While several things led to the downfall of the dinosaur park, Dennis Nedry was most at fault. Nedry made the location’s computer network. After getting paid by Dodgson, he shuts down the security systems to get the embryos out of the lab. Unfortunately, Nedry was killed in the aftermath, and dinosaurs could escape without a security system.
While fans of the franchise know him perfectly, most people know Wayne Knight from another pop culture phenomenon: Seinfeld. Knight played Newman, Jerry’s annoying neighbor in the sitcom. You might have also seen him on 3rd Rock from the Sun and Hot in Cleveland. Additionally, the actor lent his voice for several animated films.
Jackson played Ray Arnold, the lead engineer of the park. He was always in the control room and tried to save everyone when the disaster began. Sadly, the character got killed by a velociraptor at some point. Meanwhile, the actor is one of the most important Hollywood stars globally and is currently part of another franchise.
In 1993, Jackson was still fairly new to the business, but he reached worldwide fame in 1994’s Pulp Fiction. Since then, he has been in important movies, including the Star Wars franchise. However, the actor is best known now as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is set to appear on Disney+ upcoming series, Secret Invasion.
Do you remember that animated figure of the park? Mr. DNA was a cartoon biology sequence. Anyone that went to the Visitor Center in the park could get information. The animated character appeared in a movie with John Hammond, as they explained how they created these dinosaurs. It was also seen on signs around the park.
Voice Actor Greg Burson gave life to Mr. DNA, but that was definitely not his only work. Burson was mentored by Daws Butler and took over his characters when he passed away. He also voiced Yogi Bear and Huckleberry Hound. Eventually, Burson handled Mel Blanc’s characters: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and others. Unfortunately, he died in 2008.
Dern played the role of Dr. Ellie Sattleer, a paleobotanist who examined the plants in the park. She didn’t like the fact that engineers had used extinct plants. Meanwhile, the actress had been nominated for an Academy Award for Rambling Rose in 1992. Since the movie, she has had an amazing career in Hollywood.
She worked in movies such as I Am Sam, The Master, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. She recently won an Academy Award for Marriage Story. However, many people recognize her best from HBO’s Big Little Lies, for which she won an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2017. Additionally, Dern is expected to return for Jurassic Park: Dominion.
The franchise's main character was Dr. Alan Grant, the paleontologist who also came to the park to access it. He loved dinosaurs but was cautious regarding this location. In the end, Grant becomes the hero that leads saved Hammond’s grandchildren after they got lost in the park.
Neill was already an important actor by the time he got the part in Jurassic Park. In 1993, he also starred in The Piano, a highly accoladed film. In 2001, he returned to the Spielberg franchise in the third installment. His other movie credits include Merlin and The Tudors. But you might recognize him best from Peaky Blinders, where he plays Chester Campbell. But what about the kids in the film?
Mazzello played the role of Tim, one of Hammond’s grandkids. Mazzello might not be the most recognized Hollywood actor, but he has appeared in some major projects. He appeared on The Social Network as one of his college mates that inspires him to add relationship statuses to Facebook.
He also appeared in HBO’s The Pacific, but most people might know him best from Bohemian Rhapsody. He played John Deacon, bass guitarist of Queen. After filming ended, the actor tweeted, “I'm sad. Every moment was a pleasure. Every day was a blessing. One of the all-time great experiences of my life."
In a 2013 interview, Mazzello revealed that Spielberg personally helped him get into the University of Southern California. "Steven wrote me a recommendation for USC to go to film school. Believe it or not, I got in," Joseph explained. "He's been there for me throughout my life whenever I really needed him."
Richards played the role of Lex Murphy, another of Hammond’s grandchildren. Interestingly, she had already accumulated 16 acting credits by the time she got the part in Jurassic Park. They were relatively small roles, but you might remember her from 1989’s Christmas film Prancer, where Ariana played Carol Wetherby.
You might have also seen her in guest appearances on The Golden Girls, Spaced Invaders, and Switched at Birth. Of course, Ariana also worked in television. She was in Into the Homeland, My Sister Sam, Empty Nest, Island Son, and several others. Unfortunately, Richards has not appeared in many things lately.
The actress appeared in several other TV movies, such as The Princess Stallion and Battledogs after the Spielberg franchise. Unfortunately, it seems that she lost her taste for acting after the dinosaur saga. Instead, Richards is focused on her new career and her family. She is now an artist.
The actress told People how she changed careers after years in the acting business. It’s currently her main profession. "I love to work with people in the art and express their story on canvas and my impression of them and what they want to express and use oils, brushes, canvas to create something that will last the generation," the former actress explained.
Meanwhile, the actress continued to have a fondness for filmmaker Steven Spielberg. She even sent him a painting of herself which was based on a scene in the movie. Apparently, he hung it in his office. Furthermore, Richards explained that he is a great gift-giver as well. He always sends her something around the holidays.
The artist moved to South America for her art tour and currently lives a better life than during her time as an actress. "My life story these days, I still experience the red carpet as an artist," Richards told People. "But on a day-to-day basis, I live kind of a country life." But there’s always a chance she might act again.
Despite giving up her acting career, Richards doesn’t rule out returning to the big screen or television. She apparently keeps up with everything that’s happening in Hollywood unless she’s working on her art. "If some great role or project finds me, absolutely that could be a nice thing to do, for sure," Ariana said.
For now, she is focused on her art and her family. Richards got married in 2013 to Mark Bolton, and the couple welcomed their first child in 2015. At the time, the artist told People that they were incredibly excited about their pregnancy and looking forward to becoming parents.
You can keep up with Ariana on her Twitter account, where she posts her artwork. Furthermore, she reunited with Jeff Goldblum at the premiere of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2017 and posted a picture with him. But there’s no word on whether she or Joseph could return to the Spielberg saga like some others in the cast.
