GRAPHOLOGY: THE STUDY OF HANDWRITING

Graphology is the study of handwriting as means of analyzing character. It is also known as handwriting analysis, but graphology is not a branch of linguistics. This was coined from Greek words, which mean “writing” and “study.” In the field of linguistics, graphology is used as a synonym for graphemics, a scientific study of the customary ways in which spoken language is transcribed. But, is it really reliable?

RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY OF THEIR METHODS

Handwriting experts can help us determine who wrote a particular word or signature or analyze a person’s character through their handwriting. The science behind handwriting analysis is based on the assumption that no two people have identical writing. Are their methods valid and reliable?

THE METHODS AT HAND

Graphologists can somehow create valid predictions, and non-graphologists can also do the same thing. It is an observational science that relies on the accuracy of results. Although it may not be a completely exact science, graphologists can provide a near accurate assessment of one's personality. It like a window into your true self, some would say.

A WINDOW TO YOUR MIND

It’s no surprise that we can now learn a lot about someone based on their writing. Graphologists believe that our handwriting is a window into our minds, and since they mostly analyze it on how someone writes letters and words on a piece of paper where they can analyze a person’s psychological profile.

PEOPLE EVEN USE IT TODAY

You'd be surprised to find out that the study of one's handwriting is even being applied practically in the setting you'd be familiar with. Some employers even use handwriting analysis to screen potential employees for compatibility. After all, it is a mirror to oneself and a product of mental capacity.

ONE THING YOU SHOULD KNOW

A person's handwriting is just like their fingerprint. Handwriting is as unique as a person can get; there are no two people in the world with the same exact handwriting. Even expert forgers of people's handwriting can get everything completely correct. So let's start with the size of how you write.

HOW BIG OR SMALL DO YOU WRITE?

Reading and analyzing someone’s handwriting can say a lot about their personality. A person’s handwriting, no matter how big or small or average-looking it is, can help you determine if they are outgoing or introverted or if they have strong concentration skills.  How big or small is your handwriting? Or are you the type of person who writes average letter sizes? No matter how big or small it is, no handwriting is the same, and each handwriting has different meanings.

IF YOUR HANDWRITING IS LARGE, IT MEANS…

If your handwriting is large, it means you are an outgoing person who has lots of friends. Many celebrities have large handwriting, and large handwriting also means you have a big personality. You are outgoing, and you love communicating your thoughts and emotions upfront because of you.

BIG LETTERS = BIG PERSONALITIES

Having large handwriting also means that you can pretend that you are confident in what you are doing. Channel your inner superstar and be confident in your own skin. For some people, it may be a way of enforcing their personalities onto their written work or at least psyching themselves out through their writing. Here’s what small handwriting means.

IF YOUR HANDWRITING IS SMALL, IT MEANS…

Is your handwriting small and doesn’t reach the top line? Do you also want to know more about your personality through your handwriting? Don’t worry, because even small handwritings have meanings too like their big counterparts. If you have small handwriting, it means you are shy or withdrawn, studious, concentrated, and meticulous.

MORE WORDS FOR YOU TO EXPRESS

Having small handwriting also means you are a reserved person and you tend to be introspective. Do you know what they say about how silent waters run deep? Well, writing in smaller letters just means you have more to write about. But what if your handwriting is average-looking? What does it mean?

FOR AVERAGE HANDWRITING, READ THIS…

If you have average handwriting size, it means that you can easily adjust and adapt to the people around you. It also means that you demonstrate a strong ability to focus and concentrate. Other analyses say that people who have average handwriting are shy, studious, concentrated, and meticulous. Handwriting analysis is based on accuracy, and no handwriting is the same.

THE SPACES BETWEEN YOUR WORDS

Spaces in our handwriting are also one of the bases of handwriting analysis. People who leave large spaces between their words reveal that they are the type of people who enjoy freedom and independence, while the people who squeeze their words together like the company of others.

STRONG-WILLED

Handwriting analysts reveal that people who totally jam their handwriting suggest that they might be people who have strong personalities. They tend to be pushy or have the tendency to crowd people. Still curious what the spaces between your words might mean?

FREEDOM AND A FREE THINKER

The spacing left between letters is another pillar of handwriting analysis. If your letters are widely spaced, you’re more of an introvert. Yes, you love to be alone, you enjoy freedom, and you are a free thinker. You do not only prefer to be alone, but you also prefer to enjoy marching to the beat of your own drum. You love your ability to breathe freely.

YOU ENJOY THE COMPANY OF OTHERS

Contrary to people who leave large spaces in their writings, graphologists’ believed that people who write with narrow spaces tend to be more extroverted. These people can’t stand being alone, and they tend to crowd people and tend to be intrusive. Like the letters, its writers scream for the company or host parties.

RELIABLE TYPES

These people can be dependable but somehow very meek at the same time.  They’re the type of people who show up even when they are busy with other obligations.  It’s not hard to see the psychological significance of the spaces between your words. Here’s another way to read a personality through their handwriting.

THE WEIGHT OF YOUR HANDWRITING

Even pen pressures can tell us about someone’s personality. Heavy pen pressures can suggest that a person is tensed or angry at something. Moderate heavy pressure can suggest that a person is committed, whether it is at work or in a relationship. Soft pen pressures suggest that a person is empathetic and sensitive. It also means that a person lacks vitality.

IF THE PEN PRESSURE IS HEAVY, IT MEANS…

If your pen writing pressure is heavy, it means that you are good with commitment and you take things seriously. You are the type of person who is tense and has repressed anger. If the pressure is excessively heavy, you are an uptight person that may be a little bit of a control freak.

NOT JUST UPTIGHT

Aside from just being uptight, people might also consider you as a person who quickly reacts to any criticism that is being thrown in your way. But does that mean you have a short temper or are a bit forceful of yourself? Not entirely. After all, you are the person who is in control.

IF YOU’RE PEN WRITING IS LIGHT, IT MEANS…

Are your pen strokes softer than the rest? If yes, this could indicate that you are a person who is committed, whether it is at work or in a relationship. While lighter writing strokes in which a person can barely read the ink could mean that you’re sensitive and you lack energy. That's not all you are.

A THOUGHTFUL ONE

The best part about you, based on how light you press your pen onto your writing sheet, is that you are sensitive, and you show empathy towards people. You also have the ability to stretch your patience like no other. Still can’t get enough?

IT’S NOT ABOUT THEM; IT’S ABOUT YOUR LETTER “I”

How do you write your letter “I’? Is the dot high on the page? Is it placed close to the letter itself? Is it dotted on the left? Are you fond of putting circles instead of a dot? How about the way you write it? Do you write it in larger capital letters? Or do you prefer to write your capital letter “I” smaller than the others? Whatever way you write, in handwriting analysis, it also has secret meanings.

THE WAY YOU DOT YOUR LETTER I

The way you place a dot or don’t dot your letter “i” says a lot about someone’s personality. People who place their dots high have wide imaginations and have imaginative personalities. People who place their dots to the left tend to procrastinate. If you would rather create a fancy circle above your letter “i,” it means you possess childlike qualities. How you place your dots has an interesting analysis behind it. What about writing your capital letter I? How do you write it?

DO YOU PREFER IT SMALL OR LARGE?

Even how a person writes their letter gives us a lot to know about that person. Writing the letter “I” refers to yourself; how do you write it? If you write your capital letter “I” larger than other capital letters tend to be arrogant. While people who prefer to make their capital letter “I” smaller than other capital letters tend to be happy with themselves. Whether you prefer to write your letter “i” large or small it says a lot about yourselves, just like how you sign important papers.

IT’S A SIGN!

What does your signature say about you? Sign your documents accordingly because handwriting analysts can also read your personality based on your signature. A legible signature is a sign of confidence, you are comfortable in your own skin, and you’re open-minded. To you, the illegible signature on your card receipts means you’re in a hurry, but it’s a sign of a private or hard-to-read person, or you have inscrutable personalities. Sign your papers neatly; now, let’s talk about how much space you use on paper.

A HINT AT OUR STATE OF MIND

Do you love to write all over the page? Do you start writing on the left side of the page? People who write on the left side of the paper are people who dwell in the past a bit and people who leave spaces on the left margin worry too much about the future, and people who write all over the paper have a racing mind. Check how you use your page for writing. Do you start on the left or do you write all over the page?

WATCH WHERE YOU HANDWRITING SLANTS

Which way do your words lean? Does it lean on the right? Or does it lean on the left? Or it doesn’t slant at all? Even how your handwriting slants also has deeper meanings once a handwriting analyst analyses them. Right indicates that a person has an outgoing and a future-directed personality. In comparison, those whose handwriting slants to the left means that the person is a more reserved observer. How does your handwriting slant?

IF YOUR HANDWRITING SLANTS TO THE RIGHT, IT MEANS…

If your handwriting slants to the right, it means that you like to meet and work with new people. Aside from that, handwriting that slants to the right also indicates that the person is outgoing and has a future-directed personality. You’re also the type of person who has an open mind, and you love to seek out new experiences. You also value your friends and family. They’re a striking contrast to those whose handwriting slants to the left.

IF YOU’RE HANDWRITING SLANTS TO THE LEFT, IT MEANS…

Contrary to its right slant handwriting counterparts, people whose handwriting slants to the left are people who are reserved and introspective. They’re also known as a more reserved observer, and they prefer to keep things to themselves. People whose handwriting slants to the left are also known to be ruled by logic and not by their emotions. They are also known to be very solid and also pragmatic. Does your handwriting slant to the left? It looks like you really love to keep things to yourself.

WHAT ABOUT HANDWRITING THAT DON’T SLANT?

What about those whose handwriting doesn’t slant at all? The principles of graphology say that people who don’t have a slant to their handwriting are practical, logical, and are most likely less hung up on their emotions. If your letters don’t slant dramatically in either direction, it’s a sign that you’re an ambivert or someone who empathizes with and shares qualities with both introverts and extroverts. In simple terms, these people are totally balanced in keeping their emotions and thoughts in check.

CHECK THE PRINTED LETTERS FOR EXTRA CLUES

There are several letters in the alphabet that can be written in different ways. Everyone has their own style and preference when it comes to writing these letters. Someone’s method of writing these certain letters can also become the basis of knowing someone’s personality. Every narrow loop, dots on the lowercase letters, how a person writes their capital letters, no matter how big or small, has a deeper meaning. How do you write your letters? What’s the meaning behind every letter you write?

HOW DO YOU CROSS YOUR LETTER T?

Your letter T’s also has a lot to do with what your handwriting says about you. How do you cross your letter T? Handwriting analysts reveal that people who cap off their letter t with a long cross means that person is determined and enthusiastic and is quite stubborn. If people cross their t too short, it means that they are lazy. Here’s another analysis of people who cross their letter “t’s” high and low.

AIM HIGH AND RAISE YOUR BARS

Here’s the continuation of the letter T analysis from the previous item. People who tend to cross their lowercase t’s up high are likely to be people who have a lot of goals in life. These people also aim high and never settle for the less. In comparison, people who cross their lowercase letter T means that they tend to aim low, and they have insecurities. They also need to raise the bar for themselves and learn from people who cross their letters up high.

EVERY LOOP NARROW OR NOT HAS A MEANING

A widely looped “I” suggests that the person who uses this style is relaxed and spontaneous. While a narrow or retraced letter “I” means that the person who wrote it or uses that style might be restricting themselves from whatever activities or decisions that they want to make. Looped letters also suggest that you have big hopes and dreams for the future, while a retraced loop is the opposite. Here are other meanings behind your style of writing.

ARE YOUR LETTERS POINTED OR ROUND?

Whether or not your handwriting style makes words or letters rounded or pointed, it also plays a role in what your handwriting says about you. If your letters are pointed, it is a sign that you are an intelligent person who might be holding back some aggression. A person whose handwriting style writes rounded letters means that they have creative and artistic abilities. It’s a good indication to know someone’s personality; it would also be nice if you ask them personally.

A MIRROR TO YOUR HEALTH

Do you have emotional health problems? Health issues, or have you been stressed out lately? Your handwriting says it all. Aside from learning someone’s personality through handwriting, handwriting analysis can now also be used to identify whether you have health problems or if you’re dehydrated. After all, our handwriting reflects our mindset, but to determine whether you’re sick, you need a good doctor and a good graphologist.

FROM LIGHT TO DARK

Did you know that what you’re writing or from how you write can actually determine whether you have health problems? One example is High Blood Pressure. Yes, you got it right. Writing with variable pressure is one possible indicator that you have high blood pressure. How can pen pressure determine whether you have high blood pressure? That is by checking if your pen pressure goes from light to dark. It’s just one of the telltale signs; if possible, you better consult a doctor.

Handwriting can indeed tell us a lot, not only about a person’s personality but also about a person’s health. It is difficult to draw firm conclusions about someone’s handwriting as people often change in response to their mood or medium used. While it is still widely accepted that analyzing and assessing one’s personality through handwriting is a quasi-science, you can still properly assess whether this science is worth your time.
