People Share Their Worst Mother-in-Law Stories

For many women, dealing with their mothers-in-law is tricky because of the misunderstandings that develop in their fragile relationships. It isn't easy for them to deal with their husbands' mothers, especially when there are elements like unrealistic expectations.

Like other relationships, the bond between a woman and her mother-in-law gets strained with increasing arguments and disagreements, especially when these conflicts are left unresolved.

When some women saw an opportunity to open up about their relationship on Reddit, they didn't hold back. They told everything they could to explain their complicated relationships with their mothers-in-law. Even some men joined the conversation with their stories.

Comments have been edited for clarity and grammar.

1. Don't Lock Your Door!

u/[deleted]: My mother-in-law firmly believes houses should stay unlocked so families can walk in and out uninvited. On the other hand, my significant other and I do not adhere to this, so our doors are always locked.

My mother-in-law's reaction was to take my partner's keys and make copies so she could come and go as she pleased. She was not happy when we changed the locks.

2. The Wedding Night

u/kittensandblow: My husband and I had a destination wedding in the Bahamas. My MIL is notoriously cheap and would only fly down for two nights, so she arrived the day before our wedding and went home the day after.

There was no official reception on our wedding day, but our group of about ten people sat outside for the rest of the afternoon, drinking and generally having a good time.

Fast forward to that night: my husband and I finally got to our suite around 9 p.m. and were excited to enjoy our wedding night together, alone. At around 10 p.m., our room phone rang.

It was my MIL, demanding that my brand-new husband come down to the lobby and watch a fire-eating performance or something with his mom because "I'm leaving tomorrow, and I think it's very selfish of you not to spend time with me tonight."

My husband explained that it was his wedding night, and he wanted to spend it with his wife, which prompted his mother to snap, "Oh, give me a break. It's not like tonight is extra special. We all know this isn't happening for the first time."

3. Mean Comments

u/miraclesandmo: My husband (27) and I (27) recently got married. We dated long-distance for about four years as an international couple, and after our wedding, I moved to my husband's home country.

I don't know anyone other than my husband in this new country. However, my husband is one of the most genuine, loving, and caring people I know, and ultimately, I felt he was worth moving across the world for.

Since I moved here, most of his family, including his two younger sisters and brother-in-law, has been welcoming. However, my MIL has been giving me a hard time.

It started as subtle backhanded comments about my weight and appearance that I initially told myself I was simply overthinking.

She now waits until my husband isn't around to make comments that I find hurtful because if he's around and hears them, he'll say something to shut it down.

At the beginning of our marriage, we lived with them briefly. Back then, she commented that I was a bad wife because I didn't know how to make traditional food to our culture and because I wasn't working (I was still waiting on my work permit and was finishing a grad degree).

Although I say all of this, I don't think she's specifically targeting me because she's also really hard on my SILs, especially with their appearance.

One of my SILs recently put on a little weight, and my MIL has been saying very harsh things to her, telling her she needs to lose weight and that her stomach is hanging out (she's only 16).

Today, I finally broke down to my husband and said I just can't take it anymore, especially since my parents were not like this at all, and I'm not used to this sort of environment.

I've always been confident in myself and my appearance, but I now feel really insecure. I genuinely don't know what to do.

My husband has tried talking to her and has even asked my SILS to speak to her, but he says she feels ganged up on when they do and starts crying.

4. Are You Sure the Kid Is Yours?

u/WombatBeans: There are so many stories I have about my ex-MIL. I could write a book. I don't even know if putting one story up will do justice to the kind of narcissist my ex-mother-in-law is.

I remember when she asked my now-ex if he was SURE our second kid was his child. The worst part was that he questioned me about it. Thanks.

Go believe your crazy mommy who's been trying to ruin our marriage since day one over me without evidence. In hindsight, I should have left him then, but I didn't.

5. I'm Allergic to Celery

A woman washing celery | Source: Pexels

u/velvetraindrops36: I'm allergic to celery. If I eat it, my heart rate goes crazy, and I get deathly pale and sick. My MIL knows this.

Mrs. Dash has celery in it, which my MIL is aware of. She cooked Christmas dinner this year; my favorite part is the stuffing.

However, this year, something told me not to eat it. I couldn't explain why, but I've learned to listen to my instincts even when I can't explain it.

Today, I had to run back inside before we went out, and she was on the phone with her friend. I heard her tell her friend, "She still doesn't know there were two lots of Mrs. Dash in the stuffing." The problem is I have no proof other than what I heard right now.

6. The Cake Topper

u/clydiebaby: My ex-mother-in-law threw a screaming fit right before my wedding started because I had forgotten the crystal cake topper she had purchased.

I believe the line "She did this ON PURPOSE to embarrass me!" was the one that rang out the loudest once people were stunned into silence by her behavior. Sadly, this is one of many, many, many stories about that awful woman.

7. My Husband's Grandmother

An angry older woman | Source: Shutterstock

An angry older woman | Source: Shutterstock

u/loo1162: My husband and I moved five hours from our families two years ago in June. My MIL (my husband's grandmother who raised him) and his entire family pitched a fit when we told them we were moving into an apartment together.

They were even more mad when we didn't tell them that we had moved in. 2 months later, we got engaged, and no one bothered to try and stop us.

We got married last November, and I figured his family would be a little more welcoming to me once I was officially a part of their "family." Nope.

MIL walked around my wedding telling everyone, "They're not having a baby for a LONG time," then looked at me and asked, "Right?"

Then, the next day, we went over to her house, and she asked me how much money we make in a month. When I gave her a rough estimate, she said, "No way! No, you don't!"

Since then, we haven't made the drive back for a while. This past weekend, we drove to my MIL. The first thing MIL says is that my husband has "gotten fat."

Then, she looked at me and said, "Oh, you too, huh?" and proceeded to send pictures of my husband to his mother, who he is NC with.

The next day, my husband went to his grandparents' house without me, and MIL said she felt bad for calling me fat and then sent me a long message about how she was sorry.

She proceeded to tell my husband's mom that I was "sensitive" and asked my husband if I was pregnant. When he said no, she asked if we were using protection (totally not her business!), and my husband said sometimes.

MIL got mad about this and asked for me to come over so she could apologize in person. I chose not to come back over for my sanity.

8. 'The Crazy Church Lady'

A church | Source: Pexels

A church | Source: Pexels

u/Liar_tuck: My MIL is the crazy church lady. She believes anything and everything can be fixed by going to church more, but only the right kind of Baptist church, mind you.

My wife has some pretty bad health issues, and MIL thinks she should stop taking her medication and, you guessed it, go to church more.

She once tried to steal my wife's meds to "prove" they were just poison and that my wife would be better off without them. My MIL is not allowed in our house anymore.

9. The Extra Guests

A woman sitting with her face resting on her palms | Source: Shutterstock

u/pennylane3339: My MIL gave us a list of 53 people that HAD to be at our wedding. The cost was $110/pp.

It was her friends that we barely knew. She didn't offer to pay for any of them. Eventually, we cut most of the list and only told her who made it a few weeks before the wedding.

10. My Good Child

u/piacocco: My MIL seems to like me up until the point where she tells strangers (in front of me) that I took her good child away from her.

We live across the country from his parents, and he moved here for me, so she's not wrong. She's also not wrong that he's her good child.

11. The Wedding Gown Story

A white wedding gown | Source: Pexels

A white wedding gown | Source: Pexels

u/Portage-Dreamer: One of my horror stories is when we went to pick out my wedding gown. My crazy mother-in-law, good crazy mom, myself, and bridesmaids went to look at dresses and gowns.

In front of everyone, my MIL told me that she would pay for my dress before we left for the store. I looked at many dresses and tried on two or three.

It turned out that I picked the wrong dress. I chose one for myself, not what my MIL wanted me to wear. And she left. She left without saying a word, not even bye.

Thankfully, I could charge for the gown and the bridesmaids' dresses. (I had four simple black dresses that I had planned on purchasing). This story will be one of many to come.

12. Random Gifts

u/mostlycareful: My ex-mother-in-law used to buy very random things to give as Christmas gifts. One year, I received a gallon of windshield washer fluid and several other very random things.

13. We Need Another Bed!

u/[deleted]: My boyfriend's mother and father helped us move into our new place, and she put all of my BF's stuff (clothes, books, etc.) in one bedroom and all of mine in another.

Then, genuinely confused, she asked why we had only brought one bed in the moving truck. She asked if we had ordered another one for him. No one had the heart to tell her.

u/EsmeWeatherwax: My mother-in-law offered me her used lingerie while my husband and father-in-law looked on in horror.

15. The Hatred

Two women talking to each other | Source: Shutterstock

Two women talking to each other | Source: Shutterstock

u/gtheorem45: When my fiancée and I started dating in college, her mom (a single mother), who hates me passionately, kicked her out of the house over the summer.

She had never talked to me, never met me. I believe her hatred of me was related to my past as a drinker, but as cheesy as it sounds, once I met my fiancée, I turned my life around, and she has loved me despite my faults.

Now, I think my fiancée's mother hates me because her daughter chose me over her. I have emailed her several times, but she refuses to meet when I ask her.

She gets angry when she reads them and yells at her daughter over the phone. All she knows about me are stories she heard from my fiancée.

Honestly, I don't know if she would even recognize me if I saw her on the street. After my fiancée was forced out of the house, she moved in with a family friend.

My fiancée loves me with all her heart, and her friends love me too, but my future mother-in-law still blames me for "tearing the family apart."

My fiancée tried to get her to see reason, but nothing worked. It kills me that the mother of the woman I love hates me.

16. She Wanted Things Her Way

A young couple talking to an older woman | Source: Shutterstock

u/lilacs_love: I have a wedding story with my mother-in-law. When we announced our wedding date, she insisted that she be the center of attention and all details needed to be approved by her.

She said she would pick something more "proper" if she didn't like what we chose. She was not paying for anything but wanted the final say on my dress and the guest list.

Besides that, she wanted the date and venue changed because she might have to work that day. Two months out, but she couldn't change her unscheduled shift for a local wedding.

My husband was thankfully very firm with her. He never really had a great relationship with her and was raised by his grandparents because she would spend all her time partying.

Everything came to a head when he told her we were not changing anything we picked for the wedding, including the day, no matter if she couldn't attend it. Her response was to try to break into our house because my husband was being lied to.

u/diviner_of_data: My future mother-in-law said that because I purchased Parmesan cheese, I wasn't good with money and shouldn't marry her daughter.

18. Mother's Day

A woman kissing her child | Source: Pexels

A woman kissing her child | Source: Pexels

u/unicorncasual: As a preface, my mother-in-law and I don't get along and never really have. She has firm opinions, is extremely sensitive (this is a challenging combination), and is objectively passive-aggressive.

She frequently (almost exclusively) says and does things to get a rise out of people. My husband's family lives about four hours away, and our three-month-old is their first grandchild, so they're very excited to spend time with him.

Moreover, my MIL has occasionally referred to my son as "our baby." Then, my in-laws told us a few days ago that they will next visit us on Mother's Day.

They didn't say, "We were thinking of the first weekend in May. Does that work for you?" but straight up, "We're planning to come for Mother's Day weekend."

I can't stop feeling frustrated by this. We didn't have anything in particular planned, but it's my first Mother's Day, and it took a lot to get here (infertility, IVF, a NICU stay).

I actively dislike being the center of attention, but I did want to spend the day enjoying our little family.

My read on the situation is that she's visiting for Mother's Day because she wants to be celebrated, which is fine. It's Mother's Day, and she's a mother.

What grinds my gears is ostensibly not recognizing that I, too, am a mother and that I might have had some way I wanted to spend my first Mother's Day that didn't include a visit from someone I don't get along with (she is very aware that our relationship is strained at best).

Even if she had just asked first if we had other plans or if it was ok, I would have felt better about this.

I know I'm reacting uncharitably to this visit. As annoying as this woman is to be, personally, I do want my son to have a relationship with his grandparents. But I can't stop feeling increasingly frustrated every time I think about this visit.

19. My Kids Call Me 'Mama'

A woman with her grandchild | Source: Pexels

A woman with her grandchild | Source: Pexels

u/thessecretkeeper: My MIL taught my toddlers to call her Mama while my husband and I were on a 2-week trip. My kids call me "Mama," and she knew that all along.

I've always felt like an outsider in their family. She favors one of my SILs, making my other sister-in-law and I feel like we're never good enough.

She has consistently judged how I raise my kids, knowing she didn't raise her kids. (Nannies raised my husband and his siblings.) So this made me feel like she was trying to usurp my role as my kids' Mama.

20. She Demanded a DNA Test

A DNA test report | Source: Shutterstock

u/TWILSON3054: My husband had a child from a previous relationship. She is a blue-eyed blonde beautiful little girl.

When my husband and I were pregnant with our first child, my MIL became a horrible person. Or should I say she showed her true colors?

Once our daughter was earthside, she came to the hospital to see her. My daughter was dark-haired and had hazel eyes.

In my MIL's mind, the baby could not have been her son's. While she was holding our daughter, she demanded that my husband take a DNA test to prove that the child was his.

Meanwhile, I was utterly shocked and heartbroken. Not only was she denying my baby, she was insinuating that I had slept around.

Fast forward to the next six months, she continually asked for a DNA test. In the end, to shut her up, we took the test. My husband was her father.

We both did not doubt it and were proved correct. My mother-in-law then said the test was obviously wrong. That was it for us. We stopped talking to her.

21. Keeping an Eye

A senior woman driving a car | Source: Shutterstock

A senior woman driving a car | Source: Shutterstock

u/OutrageousSea5212: My MIL slows down when she passes my house and scans all the windows. She lives next door, and every time she leaves her place, she has to pass ours.

And she doesn't just pass—she slows her car and visibly scans every window in our house. Sometimes, we make eye contact, and it gets awkward.

I guess she likes to keep track of where we are. She has commented, "I've noticed you're not in the living room much lately—where in the house do you go?"

It's super weird and invasive, and I literally don't know how to handle it. I feel like I'm a zoo animal.

And yes, I know we need blinds, though she's commented in the past how much it would hurt her if we have blinds closed because that would "look unfriendly."

22. My Mother-in-Law's Birthday

A baby girl standing near a number 1 balloon | Source: Pexels

A baby girl standing near a number 1 balloon | Source: Pexels

u/OutrageousSea5212: My MIL wants my baby's first birthday to be combined with hers. My first baby and mother-in-law share the same birth month (though they are a couple of weeks apart).

She wants us to always have my baby's birthday party as something that's combined with her birthday. She wants one party for both birthdays.

That's messed up, right? I want to focus on my beautiful baby, not just have her birthday celebration tacked into my MIL's.

23. My Mother-in-Law's Demands

A woman taking a picture of a man holding a baby | Source: Pexels

A woman taking a picture of a man holding a baby | Source: Pexels

u/thecakegoblin: My MIL asks for pictures and videos every day of my five-month-old. She also wants to video chat almost every day.

We live across the country, so I understand she misses her grandchild, but asking for videos and images daily is too much. Moreover, one picture is not enough for her. She needs multiple photos and videos.

I have been sending ten-second videos, but she has been asking for thirty-second videos now, even though she will end up video chatting later.

Sometimes, she criticizes the pictures. For example, if my baby isn't wearing pants, she will say, "You're wearing pants, so shouldn't the baby be wearing pants?"

Sometimes, I feel like saying this to her to be sarcastic: "Baby is wearing a diaper, so shouldn't I be wearing a diaper?"

It's becoming a chore to send pictures first thing in the morning, then recording videos multiple times and sending them later. On top of that, she also wants to video chat.

I work full-time, so this adds more chores to the many things I already have to do. We have tried telling her we are busy, but she has begged for just five minutes of video time, which ends up being more because we end up conversing.

I have tried not sending photos or answering her calls, but she said she would call the cops to come to our house to see if we were okay.

She leaves voicemails crying and asking us to call her back. Once we do, she gets upset even though it's only been a day and a half since we talked to her.

To some, this may not seem like a big deal, but this will continue for the rest of my baby's life, and so it is just overwhelming to think about for me.

24. My Mother-in-Law Didn't Want to Follow the Rules

A couple walking down the aisle | Source: Pexels

A couple walking down the aisle | Source: Pexels

u/allegedlycanadian: When my husband and I announced we wanted to have a small civil wedding ceremony with just witnesses (for immigration purposes), my MIL threw a fit.

Among other things, she called our big wedding a "consolation prize" and, while she eventually apologized to my husband, she didn't say a word to me.

Fast forward to the big wedding about two months ago. Although my MIL tried to sneak into our first look, it was great. (God bless our photographer for very professionally telling her to leave.)

For a variety of reasons, we decided not to have parents process down the aisle—partially because my mother is sensitive about her inability to walk unaided and somewhat because we don't believe in being "given away" by our parents.

This was most inclusive and reflective of our values. We informed everyone of this plan several times, including at the wedding rehearsal the night before the big day.

Yesterday, we finally got all our photos back, and my in-laws walked down the aisle very much. There are photos of them waiting in the back of the church and walking down the aisle arm in arm.

I can tell, based on timing, that they weren't just going to their seats before the music started; they were walking into the music right before the wedding party.

I'm floored by the nerve but not at all surprised. I was a pretty low-key bride, and I tried SO hard to include her in things like hair/makeup, showers, speeches, etc., so it's hurtful that this one request wasn't honored.

25. Invasion of Privacy

u/chelupa1991: My mother-in-law poked her head in my delivery room between contractions. My feet were in stirrups and everything.

She had a big smile, and my husband ran towards the door to rush her out of the room. My nurse had to console me after I burst into tears right after.

26. The Accusation

A pregnant woman | Source: Shutterstock

A pregnant woman | Source: Shutterstock

u/Eternal_Priest_6061: I (20f) am pregnant, and my fiancé's mother was okay with it. However, now that I have four months until I give birth, she is accusing me of cheating (why would I do that?)

His sister also says that I cheated with some black guy from college. I haven't been to college in months. I quit going when I was five weeks pregnant because I didn't want to deal with more stress.

Now, my MIL and SIL are saying bad things about me. I also forgot to mention that this started last month when he went over there on a Sunday, and she told him to get a paternity test.

When he asked her why she was accusing me of cheating, she said she wasn't. Instead, she claimed she just "wanted him to be safe."

27. Tell Me the Name!

An older woman talking on her phone | Source: Shutterstock

An older woman talking on her phone | Source: Shutterstock

u/thelifeofme101: We went to lunch with my MIL one day, and she asked us if we had a name for the baby boy we were expecting.

We said, "Yes, we have a name but aren't telling anyone." Despite our response, she kept asking and said she had to know because she was ordering a custom gift. We apologized to her, saying we wouldn't disclose our unborn baby's name to anyone.

Later, the same day, she sent me a link to a custom blanket and said, "I need a name." I didn't even respond because I just can't.

She is the type of person that would post it on Facebook or tell everyone. She even asked at lunch, "What if I promise not to tell anyone? Can I know?" Sorry, nope!

28. Why Does She Look Like You?

A woman with her baby on the beach | Source: Pexels

A woman with her baby on the beach | Source: Pexels

u/GemTaur15: My MIL has literally seen my 4.5-month-old less than six times, but whenever she visits, she always says something negative, criticizes my parenting skills, and acts like she knows my baby better than I do.

She is very clever and always comes by whenever my husband isn't home, so it's her word against mine.

The worst was she got visibly upset that my daughter is now starting to look EXACTLY like me and not her side of the family (like really, woman? She IS MY daughter, so she has MY DNA).

She's also hurt that my Mom will take care of the baby when I return to work. I'm cordial with her but try to avoid her at all costs.

29. Where Are My Grandkids?

An unhappy woman talking to a couple | Source: Shutterstock

An unhappy woman talking to a couple | Source: Shutterstock

u/Bisexualdw: My mother-in-law is obsessed with having grandkids and is in complete denial that my husband and I aren't planning on having any.

The last time she visited, she stole one of my birth control pills, thinking I wouldn't notice. And he's not even her only kid!

He's the only boy, so his sister's kids wouldn't matter. She recently said she'd pay me $30,000 to have a kid. I told her to raise it to $100,000 and get back to me.

30. The Veggie Sauce

People sitting together for dinner | Source: Shutterstock

People sitting together for dinner | Source: Shutterstock

u/[deleted]: My 9-year-old daughter became a vegetarian about eight months ago (her friend's older sister's influence) and takes it surprisingly seriously, given her age.

However, for some bizarre reason, my MIL has a problem with it and hates that my husband and I allow it.

We had a minor confrontation about it a few months ago, but she seemed to back off after I clarified that I wasn't interested in her input.

We had dinner with my husband's parents on Friday night, and she served spaghetti. It was a meat sauce for the rest of us, but when she gave my daughter her bowl, she said, "And a special veggie sauce just for you," all sweetly.

Halfway through her bowl, my daughter started to panic and asked MIL if she was sure there was no meat in the sauce. MIL insisted there was none.

I took her plate to inspect and found beef in her sauce. When I stated it had meat, my daughter immediately began to cry.

I took her into the living room to calm her down while my husband confronted his mom. At first, she insisted it was an accident, but after he established he didn't buy that for a second, she admitted it was intentional.

She explained that she wanted to remind my daughter how delicious meat was so she would "give up that vegetarian nonsense."

She said she couldn't see what the big deal was and suggested we get daughter therapy because the fact she cried over it was "very troubling and a sign something is wrong with her."

At that point, I insisted we leave. In the car, we explained to our daughter that there was nothing wrong with her and that her grandma was 100% wrong, although she had already concluded that.

Then, my MIL sent a text apology to my husband. It was basically, "I shouldn't have done that, but... -insert essay about why eating meat is no big deal, and our daughter overreacted here-" He hasn't responded because we're still trying to figure out what to say and how to handle the situation.

I told my husband I don't trust his mother to feed my kids anymore. He thinks I'm overreacting and we should give her a second chance once the dust settles with this, but my trust is gone.

31. My Son's Condition

A woman playing with her child | Source: Shutterstock

A woman playing with her child | Source: Shutterstock

u/funny-chubby-awesome: My son had febrile seizures, surprisingly common in children under four. However, his was a bit more complicated. It was a severe medical condition, something we (my ex-husband and I) took very seriously.

They are caused by a body temperature going from normal to high too quickly. So, even if you catch a fever in time, administering a fever reducer won't prevent the seizure. It simply won't have time.

It was his first birthday party at my mother-in-law's house. Since she keeps her house much warmer than we are used to, and she dressed him in a turtleneck and a sweater vest, his little cheeks were flushed.

She asked me if I was worried that he might have a fever. I felt him and said that he should take off the sweater. Then, she took out a thermometer and said, "Well, no seizures on my watch."

Like there was something I could have done to prevent the others. My son almost died twice. I had never had more rage against another person so quickly. I sucked it up, but I was annoyed. I didn't like her statement.

Also, she cut my daughter's hair without my permission. When I told her it was unacceptable, she did it again a few months later.

I firmly told her that if she did it again, she would not have the children unsupervised again. Despite that, she did it again. She didn't get the kids for over 3 three years. That was my line.

Unfortunately, I have no control over where their dad takes them on his days, but I have trained them to tell her not to cut their hair.

32. Monster MIL

Angry woman | Shutterstock

Angry woman | Shutterstock

Deleted user: Got married and entered hell! Mother-in-law - a monster! My MIL seemed so sweet before the wedding, but boy, was I wrong. Right after the big day, she started turning my husband against me. "She's not the wife I wanted for my son," she declared at a family dinner.

I put up with it out of respect for my husband, but YESTERDAY SHE CROSSED EVERY LINE. Here I was, 9 months pregnant, going into labor. Instead of calling an ambulance, MIL calls the authorities... MIL: "Officer, she's faking it! Her screams are driving everyone crazy.

Take her to the station! "Officer: "She needs to get to the hospital, NOW!"MIL: "Why? To give birth to a baby that's not my son's? Lock her up, immediately!"And then, karma struck MIL in a way no one could have. My husband kicks down the door, bursts in, and screams, "ENOUGH, MOM! This ends now!"

He then reveals that he had secretly recorded all of MIL's cruel antics over the past few months. The recording, now playing loud for everyone to hear, exposes her evil schemes and lies. The officer, appalled by what he hears, turns to MIL and says, "Ma'am, I'm afraid you're the one coming with me."

As MIL is led away, my husband helps me to the car, and we rush to the hospital. I give birth to a healthy baby, surrounded by love and support, far away from MIL's toxic influence. In the end, karma dealt her a blow she'll never forget, and our family was finally free from her grip.
