A growing number of couples are turning to credit cards to help finance their weddings, but financial experts stress that success depends on using them strategically and responsibly. With the average U.S. wedding expected to cost $36,000 in 2025, credit cards can be a helpful financial tool — or a path to lasting debt.

According to a LendingTree report, 67% of newlyweds surveyed used some form of financing to cover wedding expenses, including credit cards and personal loans. While 46% primarily used savings, 24% relied on credit cards. A separate survey from wedding platform Zola found that 31% of engaged couples plan to use credit cards, including leveraging points or opening new accounts.

“If you’re strategic, a credit card can be an amazing tool,” said Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree. He recommends using savings to pay off charges immediately, allowing couples to earn rewards without incurring interest.

Wedding costs are climbing steadily — from $29,000 in 2023 to $36,000 projected for 2025 — increasing the appeal of credit-based solutions. Some credit cards offer substantial sign-up bonuses for high initial spending, which may align with wedding purchases.

However, experts warn against accumulating high-interest debt. “I definitely would not recommend putting wedding expenses on a card if you’re going to be dragging that out over time,” said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate. Nearly a quarter of recent newlyweds are still repaying wedding debt, LendingTree found.

Additional fees and payment restrictions from vendors should also be considered. Some may charge up to 3.5% for card use or offer cash discounts. Wedding insurance, rather than credit card protections, is recommended for large expenses such as venues or receptions.

“Ultimately, a beautiful wedding should never come at the cost of financial stress to a new marriage,” said Gloria Garcia Cisneros, a certified financial planner at LourdMurray.
